July Design Challenge: Summer Magic
What is it that makes Summer so magical???
Summer love? The beach? The hot sun? Fireflies at night? Vacations? Ice Cream? Watermelon?
This month, the ETC team was challenged to let this wonderful season be their inspiration and create something to express their interpretation of our theme "Summer Magic" .

Entry #1: Dragonfly Makedo

Description: This makedo is made on a rusty spring with a fabric body, vintage button eyes and chicken wire wings. Much larger than a real dragonfly! If you check my pics, you'll understand why I love dragonflies so much. Under the right conditions, they will perch on your fingertip. If you are in a private pool, wet your fingertips and hold them upright. Patience and quiet are necessary when you are first learning how to do this. But they land frequently, once you get the hang of it!

Description: One of my favorite things to do when we would vacation at Myrtle Beach when I was a child was to walk the beach in search of treasures. What colors and shapes of shells would I find? While the shell and pearl components of this necklace are not from my days of beachcombing, they are some of nature's treasures.

Description: The blue swirls in these glass beads reminded me of sitting by a pool and watching the patterns of sunlight and shadow, caused by the water's ripples, play across the surface and bottom of a swimming pool. These are magical memories from summers of my childhood.

Description: What's magic about summer for me is making crafts with my mom when we get to travel the 1400 miles to see my parents. Tonight we were up until 1:30 AM. Last night we made these ATC cards together for a swap she was doing. It was a joint effort. I chose the picture and saying and we worked together on colors and materials. The card, which I turned into a magnet has a happy couple enjoying a day at the beach. Looks like the wife is having a little too much fun.

Description: Summer love! This is the first collage I've made. I think of "Summer Love" from the movie "Grease", Sandra Dee in the movie "Gidget", and also the movie "Where the Boys Are"! LOL! It always seemed like fantasy, but what a delightful way to spend the summer! In all these fantasy movies, it felt like it was "Serendipity".

Description: This series was specially made for summer. Tropical colors with a limeade accent - bright, bold, colorful, delicious and perfect for summer. The necklace is an excellent accessory for a sundress when you're vacationing in a tropical paradise and tasting the salt on your margarita glass. Laughter, light cotton, cocktails on the beach... I can't think of a better way to spend summer.

Description: One of my fondest childhood memories is of spending hot, hazy summer evenings laughing, chasing fireflies, and eating watermelon with my cousins. Of course, we always had a seed-spitting contest... which always ended up in a seed-spitting war! I was inspired to capture this memory with this tiny little pincushion -- complete with teeny seeds.
