Day of the Dead (or El Dia de los
Muertos) is a holiday that focuses on gatherings of family and
friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who
have died. Traditions include building private altars honoring the
deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and
beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as
gifts.
This month, the ETC team was challenged
to create something befitting of the Day of the Dead.

Entry #1: Vince
Voodoo Doll Pincushion
Created by Beth of
BerryBlueCreations
Description: I think Vince fits this category because for
one thing he's a voodoo doll, some Latin American cultures do still
practice voodoo and other magic like it. It can be used in any
number of ways.

Entry #2: Dance of
the Bones
Created by Carapace
of Carapace
Description: The party never stops, and the dead are always
us-- er, with us. I've always loved the celebratory atmospher of
Dia De Los Muertos, the feeling that death and life are not the
sharp separation that's usually felt-- and that the dead love to
party! I tried to capture some of that with this sketch piece.
Also, dancing skeletons are a lot of fun to draw.

Entry #3: Tote Roll
Up - Bones
Created by Elisa of
Efran
Description: Tote Roll Ups are great for reuseable shopping
bags, lunch, books, whatever. The great thing is that they roll up
small, hold closed with a button and are super stylish! Keep one or
two ready for shopping trips in your purse or car. This one
features a great print of skulls & crossbones with roses.

Entry #4:
Skullkins
Created by Ginger of
GigisPurseCharms
Description: Mini Day of the Dead "Skullkins" girl. Approx 2
in. I think Skullkins fits this category because she celebrates the
festivals each year. She would go perfect on a shrine or just to
have on display.

Created by Karly of

Description: I love to scrapbook, but had a hard time

Entry #11: Gothic
Fairy
Created by Linda of

Description: My "Gothic Fairy" attends all the "Day of the
Dead" celebrations. She lives for it! She has magical powers, can
fly with her bat wings, and has the ability to frighten the bad
spooks away from the festivities so the folks can have a good time
and feel safe while they honor thier loved ones who have passed
away, especially when the people go to the grave sites!

Entry #12: Floating
Skull
Created by Shaydee

Description: I created this with the Day of the Dead in
mind. It's a day of the dead skull surrounded but ever so gently
floating in the middle of the colored wire. The wire represents
smoke.

Description: I envisioned our loved ones who have passed
surrounded by a light. This is a representation of that.

Entry #14: Goblin
Market Necklace
Created by Mags of
TheOtherMagdalene
Description: When I saw this vintage cabochon, I immediately
thought it would be great for a ghostly necklace - she's doubled at
most angles and in most lights, so she's not quite there. Keeping
with the Elysia theme, I was able to integrate a darkly mystical
side into the series. Based on the "Goblin Market" poem by
Christina Rossetti, 'Laura wanders still, a ghostly image of
herself thin and gray, thirsty and hungry for goblin fruit that
will never pass her way again.'

Entry #15: Dia de
los Muertos Charm Necklace with Hand-painted Skulls
Created by Anastasia
of WildMoonDesign
Description: I am new to Etsy and to the Texas team but when
I saw this design challenge I thought it was such a great idea I
had to try! I had to do a little bit of research about Dia de los
Muertos but I am happy I did, learning while creating something you
enjoy is great. My necklace was inspired by the bright colors and
the combination of Catholicism and ancient Aztec ritual in the
modern day celebration of the Day of the Dead. I chose colorful
crosses and painted my very own 'sugar' skulls and made a charm
necklace full of movement and color.
